Wiki Guidelines Reminder

There have been days in the past week where 3-4 people have been working on the wiki at one time! This is great! But I thought I’d re-iterate some guidelines:

Not everyone has to be good at everything: if you don’t understand how a particular wiki function works (like templates, or categories), it’s fine to leave that to the people who do. I don’t even do most of the categorization functions; Madamebadger understands it so much better than I do that I let her handle it.

Speculation and editorializing do not belong on the wiki. If the facts are not in the evidence of the published (defined as ‘available at retail’) canon, then they don’t belong in the wiki. So: “Kamaney Foster was involved in the fur trade” is wiki-eligible. “Kamaney Foster was the only fur trader because she’s the only one who’s ever been mentioned by name in a book” is a supposition. The only exception to this is when I choose to put something not yet in the canon in the wiki. Because I know stuff that you all don’t, and I’m trying to keep it organized while working on something. (You can find this out by checking the page history—my IP address remains the same from post to post.)

Worth re-emphasizing: if it’s not from a book available at retail, don’t put it in the wiki. That means if you read it as a first reader, but it’s not published yet; if you read it on Patreon, but I haven’t added it to a collection; if you talked to me and I said something, but it’s not in a book you can buy on Amazon, DO NOT ADD IT. It gets really confusing for me to run into non-published canon details that I, myself, did not put into the wiki. Please don’t confuse me, I get confused enough as it is. 

Also, please don’t comment about my ‘liberal’ versus ‘conservative’ views in the wiki, that weirds me out.

About Characters: If I mentioned a person once, you do not need to give them a wiki page. Related, if you run into an unnamed character, you can just leave them on the “Unnamed Characters” page. (https://peltedverse.org/wiki/index.php/Unnamed_Characters ) Basically, I am trying to keep the clutter down. I recognize that “only relevant details are necessary” is a judgment call, though, so I will delete or tidy up anything that gets too particular.

About Quotes: Quotes that give you a sense for the character’s personality, attitude, or approach to life should go in that character’s Quote section. Quotes that provide information about something should go in the relevant section. So Taylitha saying something about feeling like a mess should go in her Quote section, but a quote about Taylitha looking like a mess during the Strand affair should go in the plot section of that story (for instance).

And in general, please keep in mind that the purpose of the wiki is to make it easier for me to write stories for you to enjoy! If it’s useful or fun for fans, that’s great, but if the wiki needs to be optimized for my research needs, so that I can write faster, and with fewer errors. That’s why I need it to stay as clean as possible: hewing to existing canon, and without editorializing or speculation, and why too much clutter makes it hard for me. I am open to people's suggestions on how to make it more useful (which is how madamebadger ended up in charge of categorizing everything), but if I can't make it work for me, I'm going to adjust it until it does, and if there's too much for me to fix that's time taken away from writing more stories...!
