2020-10-15 17:24:12 +0000 UTCWouldn't it have been hilarious if, all along, Lanky was undoing Slick's brainwashing and he really was Ichigo's cousin Cho who fought alongside them the entire series but Ichigo was trapped in some kind of Genjutsu (wrong series, but w/e) that made him not notice.

2020-10-15 17:21:27 +0000 UTCTo be fair, the former wouldn't have felt as jarring if the arc had been given some more time to flesh these things out like Kubo intended, and the latter makes sense in the story why they were wrong. The only thing they have in common is their mothers were attacked by hollows while pregent with them, and the powers resemble hollow powers. It's a fair assumption that it might be the cause. Turns out to be the opposite, that their powers were the reason their mothers were attacked. As for Tom Petty... His entire character is the guy who knows what's going on, but won't tell you until the last possible minute. And Ichigo never asked him directly, so who know what he'd have had to say on the matter.

There's a bunch of stuff that doesn't fully make sense in this arc, like why was Uryu in hospital and the others just got memory boned, what is Tsukishima doing and why does Ginjo not know about his fullbring powers. It's one of these things that when you know what's going to happen, you can see just how many hints there were.

2020-10-15 15:25:54 +0000 UTCSo now that the big twist has been unveiled, now may be a good time to discuss the issues some people have with this arc. The 2 most notable issues are that fullbring is introduced too late into the story, and that the requirements for creating a fullbringer are stupidly specific. Introducing fullbring so late creates the retroactive plot hole of "Why didn't Tom Petty tell us about fullbringers in the beginning when Chad and Orihime awakened their fullbrings?" I for one cannot suspend my disbelief that Tom Petty didn't know what a fullbringer was given how far back the soul society's history goes and given that Tom Petty is as knowledgeable as he is. And as for the conditions for creating a fullbringer, all the proof you need for how silly the pregnant mom hollow attack requirement is is the fact that it is essentially retconned in the Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World post-manga canon light novel.
