AI Labor Supply Chain Project 

TechEquity is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising public consciousness about economic equity issues that result from the tech industry’s products and practices, and advocating for change that ensures tech’s evolution benefits everyone. We envision a world where the tech industry is responsible for building widespread economic prosperity and is held accountable for the economic harms it creates in our communities.

TechEquity is seeking a freelance investigative journalist or strategic researcher to support a short-term project related to the global AI supply chain. The project entails investigating and researching specific labor practices in the AI supply chain, with an eye toward illuminating:

• The business model of a company that employs workers in the global AI supply chain;

• Details about the finances and operations of specific companies, including lobbying expenditures, client lists, government contracts, geographic scope, etc.;

• Their labor practices and environmental impacts;

• The experiences of workers in the AI supply chain;

• Broader emerging trends and industry dynamics in the AI labor supply chain.

The deliverable for this project will be a written report/memo that may inform a public piece of advocacy journalism (if a public piece materializes, the freelancer will get the byline).

The projected length of the contract is 3-6 months with a start date in December 2024 or January 2025. Timeline could expand depending on circumstances as the project evolves. Pay negotiable within a range of $3000-5000 per month, based on exact scope of work and experience level. Payment is due 30 days after invoice is sent.

The candidate should have demonstrated investigative journalism and/or related research, ideally in tech and/or finance and/or labor.
