I delivered fuel oil house to house back in the '70s. One day I'm in a customer's basement when he yelled that my truck is spraying oil. It was a 4 inch hose that let go between the tractor pump and the trailer meter. I had a hard time climbing into the tractor cab to shut off the pump; the step was wet with oil. What a mess on the city street! The company repair guys spread bags and bags of dryer material.

2024-07-05 21:00:58 +0000 UTCMy only experience with hydraulic lines happened when I was cutting cord wood with my cousin many years ago. We were out in the field cutting/splitting logs with his then father-in-law's homemade hydraulic log splitter. It was a pretty nice one...ran off of the 1948 Allis-Chalmers tractor that he let us borrow (on another note: it HAD original tires on it until WE ran over a small, sharp tree stump and took one out). Anyway, I'm splitting a big log and am at the controls...at the rear of the splitter. All of a sudden, a line bursts, I feel wet/pressure whiz by my head, and see that hydraulic fluid is spraying about 50 feet into the air and across the field. I was LUCKY that the hose didn't take my head with it.

The current safety standards notwithstanding, you'd think just common sense would have served to mitigate that a little bit in the design? In the long run, failure is a 'when' and not an 'if' and operators don't generally work well when being doused in oil.

2024-07-05 12:52:54 +0000 UTCMy dad had a bulldozer with a low pressure/high flow hydraulic system. Since it predated safety, the hoses were right next to the seat. Twice, a hose bust, and pumped 99% of the oil all over him faster than he could shut it down.
