The Spitfire will always remind me of a friend I had in school, whose dad was restoring a similar example for him on the understanding that he achieved good grades in his GCSE exams (a basic certification taken by 16 year olds here). As he was what we would call a fartaround, he totally failed everything so his dad promptly sold the car from underneath him. It was pretty funny as an onlooker...

The term pecker meaning the lips that rendered a peck on the cheek having fallen by the wayside in the mid 20th century.

I've noticed the use of RTV more frequently on modern VW/Audi engines and even small engines like Hondas. VWs use Elring dirko in various forms which I believe is pretty equivalent to HondaBond or permatex grey like you used here. Good stuff but like you said it is all about surface prep and making sure you follow cure instructions etc.

During that time, (late 1950's) British cars were notorious for having oil leaks. They leaked so badly that the Air Force base commander banned all British cars from parking on base. Dad had to sell the car since he lived on base.
