I Bet You've Never Seen One of These!

A sneak peak at my next project. It's a diesel powered, remote control, mini log skidder. The remote is missing and it hasn't moved in over a decade.

Comments

You already have a volunteer 'test pilot' enthusiastically awaiting ignition.

Dwayne de Lung

You can work from home with it

IanH

Yeah I need to prop it up!

Watch Wes Work

I emailed the professor. We'll see what happens. Thank you so much for finding this!

Watch Wes Work

Holy shit! That's it! I can't believe you found that!

Watch Wes Work

Break out the Geiger counter.

Watch Wes Work

It immediately reminded me of this https://youtu.be/pmEO1pxAsZU?si=57I921p5cVaR2NMT I am looking forward to the content you're going to make on this, remember to know how to stop it before you get it going. It might take something more than a few boxes of oil to stop it, if it runs amok!

Tim Allan

I like it...interesting!

Bruce Rose

From the reel of cable over the drag pinch, I'll give you even odds it's not "radio control" but "remote control"--that it uses/used a box on the end of a wire. Much like the crane on a service truck or concrete pump. Figuring out what wires do what is right up Wes' Controls work experience alley, too.

Noah Orr

https://heritageproject.caltech.edu/interviews-updates/dean-edwards search the page for "forest crawler" - sounds like it may have been self-driving at one point. Super cool find.

Noah Orr

https://heritageproject.caltech.edu/interviews-updates/dean-edwards Sounds like a one-off prototype from a Caltech business venture that never went anywhere. Scroll to the bottom of this page and look at Figure 11.

I hope it didn't come from Chernobyl

David G King

Even better, you woke up and the robotic mower unit has already driven the blower around the driveway during the night :-), granted it would have been more ideal with an electric machine since starting a diesel engine automatically and unsupervised can be tricky but it could be a fun project.

The domain is someone else's, so they have probably gone out of business. I had to get creative.

My gut says it's European, just a hunch.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

Yep, a whole new profession.

Dennis Lesh

I've got a theory, looking at it I could see it being used on extreme slopes if it was tied off to another machine or possibly for getting trees out of tight spots when selective logging, I'd lean towards the selective logging applications.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

It's kinda similar but totally different. I have no idea where this thing came from.

Watch Wes Work

Like a freelance mini log skidding business.

Watch Wes Work

Unlike the rest of the state, NW IL is pretty much all trees.

Watch Wes Work

I can't figure out who made it or how it ended up here.

Watch Wes Work

I have to make it driving first. And that will not be easy.

Watch Wes Work

That's what I was thinking when it popped up for sale!

Watch Wes Work

That's the kind of thinking that got it landed in my parking lot...

Watch Wes Work

I can plow the driveway from the heated shop.

Watch Wes Work

I have found nothing about it.

Watch Wes Work

Just for tree disposal.

Watch Wes Work

It's all mine baby!

Watch Wes Work

I bet this thing cost at least that much new.

Watch Wes Work

Just what I need!

Watch Wes Work

It's gonna be a project.

Watch Wes Work

I didn't know they existed 5 days ago.

Watch Wes Work

I think that's going to be the real hurdle here.

Watch Wes Work

Here's a google of Forest Robots; scroll down. Logg Dogg. https://www.google.com/search?q="forest+robots"+remote+skidder+diesel&sca_esv=584463452&sxsrf=AM9HkKnMYAN432BK7RaJVo4OGmqSuopzSA%3A1700617260835&ei=LFxdZYjNMsys0PEP95KNgAU&ved=0ahUKEwiIk-z9vNaCAxVMFjQIHXdJA1AQ4dUDCBA&oq="forest+robots"+remote+skidder+diesel&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiJSJmb3Jlc3Qgcm9ib3RzIiByZW1vdGUgc2tpZGRlciBkaWVzZWwyBBAjGCdI2TRQkRFY9hpwAXgAkAEAmAFYoAGhAaoBATK4AQzIAQD4AQHCAgsQABiABBiiBBiwA8ICCxAAGIkFGKIEGLAD4gMEGAEgQYgGAZAGBA&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

You can bring it out here to Idaho........we have lots of trees.

Dennis Lesh

Very ambitious I’m sure you can do it but are there any trees left in northern il

sean

I'm a logger and I can confirm I've never seen anything as weird as that. Must have been a pretty specialized tool and it's time.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

You can make it self-driving!

Roger Howell

Way cool

Eric Corse

I so want this!!!

RandomThingsKeithDoes

Mount a control unit from a robotic mower and change the claw to a snowblower - presto robotic snowblower!

Anders Lundgren

This will be interesting. Whatever the logo is on the unit, I can't even find the company that built it. Stupid search engine. You may have to find a programmable RC unit for it if the OEM doesn't exist any more or EBay lets you down. At least it's sheltered, so it should be in somewhat decent shape. My guess as to why it was idle probably has something to do with the RC controller, or user incompetence.

John B Moore

Looks like a bomb disposal robot.

Peter Facey

Is that part of your Dad’s equipment stash?

Bill Scott

Nope but I could use one for a day!

KyferEz

Can't wait

Jason griggs

My nephew had a remote control stump grinder. It looked similar to this machine but with a stump grinder head. It was over 50k USD new. I'm looking forward to seeing this machine's revival!

Britt A Releford

Now that’s cool!

Joe Harris

Worst case you have a Wes Tank conversion starter kit!

Chris Jenkins

Ohh the fun to be had. Definitely looking forward to this one.

Christopher

Wow that is so cool, I didn't know these existed 1 minute ago but I want one.

Noah Orr

"It's smaller than I thought it was going to be" That's what she said

Travis Sabatini

You had me at "remote control."
