Are YouTube Videos Too Long?
Added 2023-12-12 16:01:07 +0000 UTCI asked in the community tab, but I'm curious what you guys think. The current algorithm really pushes long videos with more watch time. It seems like it's gotten out of hand with 2+ hour videos being normal in the automotive genre.
I've never watched a 2+ hour video all the way through. There just isn't enough interesting things that can happen in a week or two weeks to fill out a 2+ hour video. But maybe I'm all screwed up in my thinking. Keeping my videos short and too the point does not seem to make the algorithm happy.

It all depends on the videos, as long as they are interesting and hold my attention, I will watch them without skipping ahead.

Diesel Creek Millennial farmer This old Tony I always watch their videos entirely with the exception of skipping sponsored ads. Looking at Mr millennial farmer. So 45-60 minutes is perfect. I don't watch shorts. Like I said before, the YouTube algorithm sucks.

2023-12-15 13:26:06 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed the longer vids you (Wes) used to make however I well realize that not all the vids can nor should be that long but I wouldn't mind the 45 minute or so length vids as I particularly look forward to watching every Sunday. Sometimes I'll begin watching then my wife will want to chit chat and so in that case I'll wait to watch when I can do so without Interruptions! In all honesty if Wes and just a couple of other content creators stopped putting out content-I think I just might cancel my Y/T premium !

For creators like Wes, Rainman Ray, James Condon (who mostly does generator videos, but I'll include him), and Eric O I'll absolutely watch a long video, even though I may not be able to watch it nearly all in one sitting (I often leave the longer videos paused for hours, and sometimes it'll take a day before I get back to it), but I'll watch the whole thing. I know all of these guys produce content that's worth watching. If it's from most others, I'll shy away from it, or I'll give up in the middle somewhere.

Car, repair, diy tech for me seems to be best when it's between 20 to 40 minutes per video. 50 minutes and longer usually means I'll pause the video at some point and come back to it later or skip ahead or just close it if it's not particularly interesting.

Your usual content works well just as you have been doing it, but let’s say you decided to build a remote control for your robot logger, and turn it loose on the old family property, I’d do 2 hours on that. A big factor is also the pacing / editing: I have a harder time with more rambling, less edited videos -- the information density is too low. If you're doing a project that's large enough where you have more of the same style of content, I'd do an hour long video. But if you're filling out the extra time with more looser editing, that's a turnoff. I really appreciate the balance you've struck with your channel in showing the interesting / amusing parts without it getting boring. If something is difficult, you strike a good balance of showing the difficulty of a particular task, and then editing past the 15 minutes of struggling to keep the video moving (I love the dropped wrench counter you did recently as an example of that). Your summaries also show your character well but don't ramble all over, and you don't use excessive speech fillers.

2023-12-13 00:48:00 +0000 UTCConsider this Wes. Too much youtube to consume, not enough time for educational/entertainment. Settings/Playback Speed.. Is a 2hr duration video really 2 hours? Some skipping, yes.. but, every car youtube channel I listen to - I listen at 1.5x at least.. somtimes 1.75x.. Depends how much I have to consume. Do I have 1hr? 2hrs? allotted per day? If so, 5 videos, I have to speed it up.. So, 2hrs is really 80min at 1.5x. 1hr would be 40min. A few 20min South Main Auto becomes 12-13min... which I skip less through at 1.5x and might listen all the way to the end. Netflix let's you speed up the video. Watch music at 1x but that's it. I'm not saying "make 2hrs videos" - but keep it about the same (15-40min) and encourage listeners to listen all the way through at 1.5x for better stats.

The really interesting ones I try to save till I have time to focus on them but I listen more than watch for some of the channels. I like your content the way it is, the flashy additions to the videos can be nice but I don’t need you to waste time doing a 5 part video edit of you driving into the shop or what not, but I’m not mad at you for trying out new things. Do you and you will still have a large following. I think the biggest thing for the algorithm is having a set release time weekly that puts your channel on a schedule

If making longer videos gets YouTube to show it to more unsubscribed people, then I say do it if that is something you can sustain/have time for/etc etc. :)

There is a certain tyranny to YouTube - it seems like content creators feel compelled to turn out weekly videos, which seems unrealistic given day jobs, editing burdens, etc. Length and frequency should be less important than quality; yours have always been great 👍🏻

The channels I watch regularly are 20-40 minutes and that allows me to watch a variety of content each week instead of a few long form videos. Even from my most favorite channels it would have to be REALLY compelling to get me to watch a 2 hour video and even then I'll be skipping forward a lot. I got stuff to do too.

Camarata, Diesel Creek, CEE, and others publish quality, interesting content but I end up skipping the repetitive sections in both. If it is interesting and informative, I’ll watch for hours but that’s very hard to do in these subject matters.

No I want you to do the videos you want to do. Also maybe you won't get good data when you ask the hard core Patreon-fans 😀. For me the algorithm is irrelevant, if there is a new W W W-video I'll watch it regardless of length.

I think the longest ones I've watched have been "I Do Cars" videos and the longest have been 45-50 minutes. I think Drach's naval videos are usually an 1 hour in length and I'll sit through those. I believe that Alphabet is just messing with you with the two hour length. Do what you usually do.

With your videos specifically I tend to want to watch them directly, so I've been happy with the content that you put out. My vote is don't stretch yourself out if the content isn't there.

The shorter ones are what defines your channel right now just like the two hour marathons are what have come to define, say, VGG, and - each makes sense for what they are. It also depends so much on content. I can happily watch Diesel Creek's 60-75 minute equipment repair videos without skipping over anything, but even 35 minutes feels too long if 20 of it was just watching dirt get moved which, once I've seen it, I've seen it. For me the sweet spot would be keep doing what you're doing most of the time but add longer stuff as occasions allow, maybe once a month give or take if your editing load would allow it?

I would be more than happy to watch however long of a video you would like to put out. Dirt Perfect and Diesel Creek videos are most times near an hour or more, and I could watch all three of you for two or more easy. May have to pause and come back due to time, but would still watch them all.

I'd probably split up the watching of a 1+ hour video (hard to do that much of anything in a row for me), but would watch the whole thing without much skipping eventually. There's a channel called Lift Arc Studios and they've made some popular supercut videos that are multiple hours long and just their regular, already released videos back to back. You could do the same thing, just cut in little talking segues between vids. Clapped out garbage trucks could be one, clapped out plow trucks could be another. 2. If you want to add some stuff maybe mount a go pro high in a corner of your shop to do time lapses. It might be fun to see just how much time passes on one of your projects and to see how busy you get when you're not making content. You could lay it in as a visual segue and fatten up your times.

He describe every thing and his thoughts like a book and conversation happening at the same time. Another I love is Marty T in New Zealand. And Diesel Creek Pennsylvania and Andrew Camarate New York. The narrative is important to me.

2023-12-12 16:49:15 +0000 UTCI'm not sure where you stand on re-releasing content, but I'm seeing that is a new hot thing that's a bit frustrating. Maybe you could try combining your several parters into one video, re-release and watch the engagement numbers. In either way, i much prefer a moderate length video with solid editing and cutting vs. a long length video that has a lot of filler or "dead air" entertainment wise. I think others have touched on this fairly well. Me liking long form content, and, me liking long form content where I end up skipping through sections, are two totally different experiences and speak volumes to editing and my personal engagement. Thinking out loud, I wonder if this is why James Condon gets pushed so hard in my autoplay feed. He's got some serious length on some videos, and while he's good at his craft, it's definitely a dry repetition that doesn't involve much beyond a true verbatim repair style.

If you're doing an in-depth engine rebuild tutorial or a comprehensive history of formula 1 or something, I can see it. Most videos to me that are that length and maintain quality are by video essayists that only put out one video every 3-6 months.

But maybe you can sort find a compromise, like BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front). Do a normal video and then put 90 Minutes of you doing the thing in real time without any comment, few cuts, ... in the back and find some fancy name doing buzzword bingo. ASMR Hybrid Slow Wrenching, ...

What counts is getting the point accross to the viewer no matter how long it takes. I do not watch videos that are filled with useless information that serves no interesting/educational porpuse. Wes's videos sre extreemly educational and presented with his whit and sense of humor that makes Watch Wes Work well worth my support, short or long.

I wonder if it's a mistake on their part. TikTok/Shorts videos are still all the rage with the normies so not sure why they'd be pushing the exact opposite.

If you're working on a complicated job where 2 hours of video is needed to cover it all properly, I would go the Rainman Ray route and split it up into a few 45-60min videos instead of doing a VGG and posting a 2+hour vid. Viewers will probably skip less and one job will give you a few weeks worth of material

2023-12-12 16:20:08 +0000 UTCEntirely depends on the editing style personally, if it's something that's really in depth on a topic long formats fine but if it's not really well edited and informational all the way through I do tend to skip through longer videos. Content like from VGG or DieselCreek which tends to be on the longer side the only time I put those on is if I'm cleaning the house and need something in the background I wouldn't say that it really has my attention most of the time. But that's just me personally I definitely do agree that long format seems to be what YouTube wants to see regardless of quality unfortunately, not to say that either of the channels I mentioned don't have excellent content because they do.

For me, somewhere around the 1 hour mark is perfect - long enough to get really engaged with, not so long as to be boring. Ultimately it depends on the content creator and what they are looking to achieve. I was a bit worried when you stated that you were looking to move to be a full time 'tuber Wes as this is where i've seen other channels dip in the quality of their content. (VGG anyone?) I rarely skip, and never on your videos. Your editing and production has always been good and has got really good recently. Trust your own judgement would be my advice, don't let You Toob peer pressure you! If you're true to yourself you shouldn't go far wrong.

It's often obvious that the editor has not even watched the video. There will be whole sections that are repeated or multiple takes that are not edited out. It's kind of hilarious to me. But the algorithm loves it.

Personally, I don't mind the length of your videos because you keep it interesting throughout. However, I can understand if it's difficult for you to make more of those due to the amount of time it takes to film, edit, and publish, especially with your slow internet connection aka Donkey-Powered. Hopefully, Watch Wes Wing It will have some great content soon. Keep up the good work!

Since YT pays for actual view time so speeding it up cuts that time. Also why I am doing Patron for WWW, I enjoy watching you work 🤣

2023-12-12 16:12:50 +0000 UTCI guess I have ADHD, I prefer 10-30 minute videos, 45 is fine. I find over 1 hour too long. For example I watch Mortske but end up speeding through much of the content. I do not skip any of your content. Farmcraft is another favorite, I watch most but will skip through repetitive parts. Ronald Finger is the gold standard for me and he is 20 minutes.

I asked a couple people on the production side at the office, and they said maybe experiment and look at the Watch Time metric. If most people aren’t watching a whole 2 hour video, then that’s probably not worth your time. I would imagine that editing timeline to be a mess too. The only long video I helped out with was the PC Build Guide, it’s almost two hours long. There were over 800 B-roll shots that the editor had to incorporate. That sounded like a nightmare. Anyway, just my two bits, but I would definitely make sure it’s worth your while more than the audience. The audience can skip the video, you can’t get those hours back.

I very seldom skip in videos, unless they're going really slowly (like Steve Watkins and some of bcbloc02's long machining bits). Shorter than 20 mins and I'd feel short-changed. Didn't click the poll as all three options don't quite hit the mark.

In general, I like your editing and thoroughly enjoy your troubleshooting, especially the explanations and sketches. Likewise, I also find your personal remarks about products in general, your personal suffering, engineering or current events quite enjoyable. To me, your videos are therefore characterized by the clear representation of your train of thought, combined with those explanations, sketches and remarks. I would be happy to encounter those aspects in future videos of any duration.
