I have been watching some older WWW recently. Pretty interesting. I have an idea that you could include as a module in one of your more complicated repairs. The subject would be: How do you keep track of all the parts, nuts and bolts when you take things apart.? Honestly it is baffling that more small pieces are not lost. Just a thought.

2024-03-08 20:00:02 +0000 UTCI had the pleasure of rebuilding the lift cylinders on my Allis Chalmers ACC40 forklift. Its got a wacky try-cylinder setup where 3 cylinders are welded together. The inlet hose that feeds the whole system connects to the rod of the center cylinder, so fluid goes all the way to the bottom first (which is the top because cylinder is upside down), and then goes to the 2 cylinders which lift the carriage. There is a 4th cylinder that gets fluid last in line to lift the 3rd stage of the mast. I'm not a forklift expert, but I think its designed this way to allow for a short mast and a lot of free lift, almost 4 ft. Its an old NAVY machine that probably was used in tight spaces.

2024-03-04 18:35:25 +0000 UTCThe weather around here has been the same way, I'm smack dab in the middle of British Columbia, about a week ago we had plus 12°c, in one day it dropped to -6 and snowed 8 inches, it warmed up melted again dropped again and snowed 6 inches, our snow pack is 56% of normal, we're just starting March and unless someone changes really soon fire season will probably start in April or May this year.

2024-03-04 17:21:19 +0000 UTCIt's _el niño_ "spring" weather. Last Tuesday, when that polar front rolled through, we had sleet, which broke up 70 degree weather here in DFW. It's running about 10-15 degrees above 'normal' (but not out of line for start of _el niño_).

2024-03-04 13:38:58 +0000 UTCwe have a leaky forklift too, well, it was a forklift that got scrapped out and the mast was repurposed to make an elevator in the machine shop, the chrome is way to roached to keep it from leaking so we did the only right thing and hoseclamped a tube and a strip of rubber to the cyl that leads back to the tank, like a case drain on a hydraulic motor, but much sketchier

Based on how you explain it, i think the cushioning effect of the checkvalve/orifice makes a lot of sense- it makes the top half of the cylinder into a shock absorber, basically.. pushing against something with some resistance to change, rather than "air". Probably smooths things out and reduces jerkiness? I'd think it would work thoughout the range, not just at the end of travel, too.
