If Edison was confident in their product this video would be up and they'd be balls deep in a productive conversation about the nuance of the hybrid diesel advantage. Wes showed the hard reality that Edison and their future investors will inevitably have to confront, and Edison freaked out and got cagey. Never trusting that company.

To an extent, this is undoubtedly true, but it’s also true of every other automobile and truck manufacturer. I think the big issue with Tesla is that they have a “closed ecosystem”, like Apple computer. Third parties cannot buy Tesla parts, nor can they get any support in the form of repair manuals or software that would allow access to the vehicle’s on-board computer system.

I think regen braking is typically implemented because it’s pretty inexpensive to do so when you have an electric traction motor in the vehicle, not because it’s a great marketing advantage. It’s true that it doesn’t capture a large percentage of the energy, but it is worth doing, given that it significantly reduces wear and tear on the braking system, in addition to extending the range. There’s basically not much downside to it.

Hi Cap'n! IMO there are another couple of important components to a successful transit system. It has to be economically acceptable to the ridership, it has to be reliable, and is has to be safe for the riders. I lived in the DC area when the Washington Metro came online. I rode my bike to the Rhode Island Ave station and parked it in free, secured parking. I rode the subway to DuPont Circle and walked a block to work. Anyone who worked for the police, CIA, FBI, or any other gov't agency that carried a weapon was allowed to ride free. That made for a safe environment. It cost me $1 round trip, which was a lot cheaper than the gas to drive and park; not to mention the mental stress of driving in DC traffic. Initially the system was also reliable, although I understand in later years there were recurring problems with the braking systems. I spent a year in school on Treasure Island and went into SF very often. There was a system that worked! The cars going downhill helped to pull the other cars uphill! Who thought of that! It cost a quarter to ride and you just jumped on and off where you wanted to. I spent another year in Adelaide, South Australia and lived in Glenelg. There was a tram station and I caught it every morning after a 2 minute walk. For AU$1 I got a ride into downtown Adelaide. Adelaide had two city buses circulating on either side of the main street that were free. I rode the bus to the office in about 5 minutes for no cost. My point is that mass transit does not work everywhere, for everyone, but it can be made to work in a lot of places for a lot of people if we could just set the politics aside and let the engineers do their jobs.

There's a conundrum in Mass Transit that it only "works" in one of three cases. Case One Most Transit uses live in close proximity to each other (e.g. walking or biking distance to the station). Case two is that most of the Transit users are employed at the same location. Case three is where both Case One and Case Two apply. Every dilution of those Cases means running Transit with empty seats.

I have a BMW i3 Rex, which is a series hybrid. The original I cars (i3/i8) were series hybrids released 10 years ago, but BMW has moved away from this tech, probably for the reasons you mentioned. It works well and, emissions wise, it’s treated like a PHEV. One factor that works in Edisons favor is emissions regulations in/around ports. I work at one of the largest container handlers in the world and port emissions rules mean a lot of $500k trucks are on the horizon…..

Thanks Wes for the thoughtful comments. I am following this whole project with great interest. My region of the country has plenty of older pickups that are nearly rust free and electricity is more like .14 per kwh. I am really interested in how emisions get handled...there are NO emesions regs on 30 year old trucks; would that remain true if I converted at 1990 year truck to electric hybrid in the Edison model and used it in commercial service? I really wonder. Could I use a propane generator without emisions? Keep up the thoughtful work.

That's the sad truth about the state of our environmental politics. We're making luxury electric vehicles that sell for 70 to 100k, meanwhile, the vast majority of pollution is created halfway around the world. If we were serious about making a difference, we could invest money in those countries rather than just profit off of selling luxury items to foolish people thinking they will save the planet.

I've personally helped companies make thousands of parts for diesel engines that cannot be legally sold in the US due to emissions. They can assemble them here and sell them overseas with no issue at all.

Good analysis Wes! I could see a few scenarios where the diesel electric truck does well, although in all of the situations I can think of they would benefit a full EV as much if not more, so why bother at all with the diesel generator at all... Edison's example of using the potential energy (gravity) carting logs down a hill is almost ideal. Local delivery vehicles might have the opportunity to charge throughout the day, at loading docks etc, stop / start traffic is better for EVs as well For "line haul" (running long distances at highway speeds) I would expect the diesel electric to be worse in almost every way than a conventional ICE truck, fortunately for this situation, especially for non perishable goods there is a better option, Rail! we can even put electric lines overhead! Amazing! I think the industry buz word is "intermodal" it would be awesome to see freight companies utilise rail for line haul more and limit road vehicles to the "last mile"

That was very interesting. I'm all for the progress which is derived from entreprenuers designing and making things better. I wish the government and political mandates would get out of it. I think you have done a great job of showing how a straight change over to electric, without getting into numbers and especially all at one time with no infrastructure or manufacturing base to support, it is foolhardy. The cars we produce today are insanely cleaner than a car from 30 years ago and transportation is not the biggest contributors to environmental issues at least not in this country. We would be better off helping nations like india and other heavily populated asian nations that have lower standards and much older vehicle fleets modernize what they have even if keeping thier fleets ICE. I recently watched a video on all the fines and so forth the EPA has been hitting the diesel delete community with. They claim that one deleted diesl can produce the emissions of more than 28 emissions legal vehicles. In many nations there are very few vehicles with modern engines and emissions systems. Every one you can replace or make run cleaner is a huge improvement.

I think this is true for EVs built on ICE platforms, but not so much for EVs built on bespoke platforms. For example, a Tesla Model Y weighs a little over 4000 lbs, which is pretty similar to the weight of a comparable ICE SUV, such as a BMW X3.

This reminds me of growing up in NE PA where the mining industry used gravity train lines to move coal out of the mountains. Same concept as Edison. Heavy going down, light coming up. Very niche.

I agree and did the math (300m height difference over a very long distance brought back almost 50% of the energy put into the climb which is really only happening in ideal situation. "Sarcasm mode on" In comparison the regenerative breaking on a combustion engine in comparison only increases global warming

The spreadsheet calculates the fuel cost as an ICE and subtracts the cost of running on battery power. Then it amortizes the cost of the retrofit to give you a payback period. The math is hidden, for better or worse.

True. Hybrid semis get a weight allowance. That's not true for pickups. We're already seeing insurance rates rise because EVs are so much heavier that they cause a lot more damage when they crash.

I agree on all counts. There are service trucks in my area with batteries to power the normal PTO functions like pumps and compressors. That saves engine idle time and maybe saves some fuel. The electric company uses them, so maybe that's not a level playing field.

No quibbles with the analysis, which leads us back to the same old conclusion when determining if these types of systems "work" and are sustainable: ancillary benefits. Reduced Emissions? Reduced reliance on non-renewables? Stimulation of emerging industries and the jobs they might produce? Even if we allow that hybrids can be as good or marginally better than fossil-only traditional drivetrains by the numbers, there has to be a separate "kicker" to assist in adding value (At least given current technology and understanding or what is possible when building such systems).

Ten hour DoT "day" at 60 mph average for 255 days/yr is 153,000 miles. At 50 mph that drops to 127,500 miles/yr. Which is how you clap out those 10 & 11 liter engines.

Turbo-generation has always had appeal, particularly for not needing quite so much gearing, and all the "losses" gears impute on a propulsion system. This has, and remains, a contentious thing in ship propulsion. For ships, they almost always use series type plants rather than parallel ones. A ship does have an advantage of sitting in a giant heat sink, but, the issue of the weight of the motors is always as significant as the volume issues.

Also, the conversion kits will need radiator enhancements, as the batteries and the motors will want cooling. Which means coolant lines.

One thing that got over-looked in the "pickup truck" conversion is GVW. You put a quarter ton of batteries on a half ton truck, it becomes a quarter-ton truck. Will not matter how efficient the battery & the like are. All that would leave is the "cool" factor.

Excellent analysis Wes. It struck me as too good to be true when I first heard about the concept but I didn't have the motivation to do the analysis. I took do not want to knock Edison, but to me their solution seems to be niche rather than mass market. I haven't watched any of their videos, but in one of Deboss Garage's Rich makes the case with a number of tangential benefits such as being able to power your house from the truck in the event of a power outage. The cost is certainly a concern too, ancillary systems like electric power steering and ABS are expensive safety critical items and they're opening themselves up to a load of liability if they include them in a retrofit kit, so I assume they won't. I can't see it working but I hope I'm wrong.

Let’s forget about batteries. If you have 2 OTR’s side by side towing 80k lbs. the Hybrid has a C9 and the other is a traditional C15. If they both go 250 miles, who will be most efficient or am I thinking of this wrong?

A few comments from a long-time hybrid driver, now an EV driver. The efficiency of the Prius and similar gas hybrids comes almost entirely from their use of an Atkinson-cycle (Miller-cycle) gas engine, versus a standard Otto-cycle gas engine. The entire electrical side of the car -- battery, motors -- was put in, originally, solely to make up for the poor power-to-weight ratio of Atkinson-cycle engines. Note that there are no diesel-hybrid cars, despite hybrids being on the market for close to three decades. These folks ought to take a clue from that. Retrofit EV kits for cars have been on the market for decades, and every one has been a flop. That also ought to be a clue. You pretty much hit the high points of why. A retrofit hybrid kit? You've got to be kidding me. You got it exactly right on regen braking. It's great, in that the brakes on hybrids typically go 100K before needing any work. But it only adds a couple of percent to the efficiency of a hybrid. Almost all your propulsion energy is lost overcoming friction. The amount that is "stored" as kinetic energy is tiny, as a fraction of total energy use.

Fantastic no-BS, emotion-free video. It's like the good parts of Thunderf00t but without the recycled meme content, Tesla-fanbaiting, and 25 minutes of condescending repetition. There are use cases where ICE, various styles of hybrids, and pure EV all make sense in a vacuum and any sane discussion has to acknowledge the differences in use cases and take a critical mind to the discussion. We have our Leaf, Prius, and old Ranger for 3 very different use cases - for other people this may need to be one or two vehicles that cover similar use cases in a different balance.

You touched on the point I’ve always made; it’s most cost efficient to drive the older stuff. Given I live in the south, I don’t have to worry about rust but driving something past the depreciation curve is the most economical and as a byproduct, efficient.

this feels like it makes sense like a plug in hybrid, if you don't drive far past your battery capacity and have cheap convenient charging (IE parked at home at night) you could theoretically use 0 fuel all while still having the capability of starting the generator and not having range anxiety albeit at the cost of essentially the same fuel use as a conventional truck. Probably makes great sense in very limited use cases like being parked on the 405.. Now the parts bin generic available nature of the thing really tugs at my heart strings, Tesla is just like Apple, they have made everything impossible to repair and unsustainable in the quest of being the most clever clever who ever clevered.

Yeah, I also don't see the point in the hype. Diesel-Electric has been around for ages, in fact the first diesel powered ship was a diesel electric (Vandal in 1903). It's found it's niches where it makes/made sense and was superseded by other stuff where it didn't (interesting stuff like submarines, underground mining, ...). Also this "rolling logs downhill with extra steps" has been done before in mining, somewhere there is a thing called "eDumper", a converted rock truck which, if I remember correctly, could produce excess energy. Somebody called it a variation of the hydroelectric dam. It rolls 65 tons of rocks down the hill on every trip. It weights around the same, so anything below a 50% loss is a win.

I agree with you about the number of cars, it's a near impossible sell in North America to convince people they need to carpool or have much much smaller vehicles, people will act as though you are an idiot if you suggest they buy a small car to drive to work instead of the lifted cummins they use to roll coal on the way to work. In much smaller country's like those in the Europe it's much easier to travel on public transportation even between countries. In my part of Canada every single city had a train station at one time and we really could have had an amazing public transportation system that ran from one end of the province to the other and connected nearly every city and town, unfortunately before this issue was really being discussed most of the tracks got pulled up and more than half are now bike trails that see little use.

Wes, thanks for a very dispassionate, non-political discussion. When I was in the Navy, in the early 1970s, our ship ran two 16 cylinder Diesel engines directly coupled to two huge GE generators. The generators powered a large electric motor that turned the screw. This was long before the EV craze, so why do it? Diesel engines run a lot faster than the screw of a ship. Traditionally, the rpm of the motor is reduced through the use of reduction gearing. Turns out that reduction gears are very expensive and not very robust. Thus, the Navy opted for Diesel-electric to save money and increase reliability. How about trains? Locomotives use regenerative braking for one reason - to save wear and tear on the traditional brakes. They turn the power they get back from regenerative braking into heat, by using very large resistor packs on the top of the locomotive. Why do locomotives use Diesel electric? On a locomotive, the traction motors are mounted on the bogies right next to the wheels. The bogies have to be able to turn in order for the train to go around curves. Imagine the nightmare of trying to mechanically couple 12 wheels on a locomotive to a stationary Diesel motor in a way that allows the wheels to turn. Diesel electric solves this issue by using flexible cables to carry the power to the motors that move the train. It has nothing to do with efficiency or 'green' power; it's just the only way to make it work. I think what we are seeing is a replay of the early days of automotive engineering, back when most vehicles were steam powered and folks were trying to figure out how to make gasoline engines work in cars and trucks. If we are really serious about reducing pollution and having cleaner air, we need to look at what is really causing the pollution. One big factor is obvious in every city in the US. Just go to the highway at rush hour and count the number of vehicles carrying one person. IMHO we really need a cost-effective, efficient public transportation system that works. We will need cars for longer trips, but not as daily drivers for the 15 minute ride to work.

That presentation was quite well thought out. The graph was brilliant. Staying away from the politics and focusing on the math makes sense to me and something that can be quantified and discussed. Not sure my 1999 Ford F150 will become a candidate for an EV retrofit. As you point out correctly the factory deleting and body evaporation going on will take care of that

The vocational trucks we are seeing today are easily doubled or tripled in value once they are fitted with the build of a mixer, rollback, garbage, or pumper unit. It would be a bold approach for said market, but in all honesty I support the idea and am excited to see what technology is developed to revolutionize this market. Looking at the aggressive stigma against current aftertreatment regulations, and rightly so, it honestly feels that is what people seem to want to shift away from with the idea of an EV or hybrid build. I would expect to see here very shortly as the new 2024 and 2027 emission requirements draw near a massive shift in engine and powertrain design once again, possibly throwing these calculations completely out of wack. Appreciate the great work Wes, can't wait for the next episode.

Those damn pesky laws of thermodynamics are not easily broken... Sadly, $200K semi tractors are not that unusual. A fleet spec, day cab, small bore is a buck seventy. A large car, sleeper with the all O/O goodies can easily reach a quarter mill. So, yeah, that's one of their claims that'll hold water. Indeed, it seems like their P/U target market is older, (ie simpler/less emissions equipment), southern/western vehicles with a jillion miles on them but still possessing a clean/solid airframe.

I've watched some of their videos and they do a good job getting you excited, but they definitely feel closer to the competitors they trash frequently. I hope they don't go the way of Nikola. The mass manufacturing is another monstrous hurdle to overcome. Tesla has shown us that the things GM, Ford, Toyota, etc do are incredible and take a long time to iron out.

There is no such thing as "free" energy. Heck, there's really no "cheap" energy. It all comes at a cost. Manufacturers, especially newcomers like Edison, need to be up front with data backing their claims. Hope this helps them correct their marketing approach.
