Edison Motors Video

I decided to pull the Edison Motors video after talking with them and Deboss garage. I worked hard on the video, but it didn't have the effect I intended. Some people interpreted it as Edison being a scam and me "calling them out", which was certainly not my intent.

I'd like to make more videos about EVs, but opinions are so strong on both sides of the issue that I don't think I have the diplomatic skills to pull it off.

Sorry for any confusion.

Comments

Shady shady shady. If they wanted to actually address the issues that came up from an excellent and 100% fair analysis they should've kept it all in the light of day. Silencing and hiding discussion to prevent "controversy" just proves they don't want people digging too deep. Shoulda stuck to your guns Wes, now I'll never trust Edison motors (like they care)

Tim Busch

I saw the video and it was perfect. Clearly explained to the point (and points, they were many). It would be a great chance for Eddison and DeBoss garage to do a joint video with you and provide the data they have or say "we don't have data yet". Having an engineer like you say "OK, your math and data is OK" is the best way of getting the right people on the side of future. If there is one. Kudos to you, Wes, I'm sure you did the right thing considering the circumstance you saw.

JustJoe

I thought the video was good and I understood it well. The claims made need to be independently verified. I can claim all day I'm an English Sheep Dog but in reality I'm a grumpy old dude from Oklahoma. My wife can verify that! Its going to be a long time before we have any real viable electric trucks.

Aaron Windsor

Wes, please don't turn into another You-Tuber that constantly worries about "poking the snake". . . e.g. the comment section. You did the math and it didn't add up. period. It was refreshing, because I know, and now you know, that it has potential, but they are grasping at straws, looking for financing, they have ONE truck!!! They are at least 10 years out. Just keep doing what you do, I support no matter what.

DouglasRichard Moomey

I enjoyed your video. Didn’t find it controversial at all. People are too sensitive. These are questions that should be asked before anyone invests a ton of money into such a new technology.

Jeffrey Burdess

EV's rule, I'm just going to run my petrol cars and invest in lithium mines.

Proluxelectronics

Yeah, I guess one of these unwritten social media rules is to not harsh other folks buzz.

Anditainment

This is why I don't make content. Your opinion are yours and you backed them with facts. You never "called out" anyone. Physics is pretty brutal, and I have no ill will to any EV provider, but without guv assistance, at least in the US, they would not exist. Few people want the benefits of total electric. Worked on a concept plane that they are trying to electrify, and even they couldn't tell me if there was a market for it. Don't change your ways, some us watch because of that no nonsense rapport.

Rod Richeson

Glad I caught this before it got pulled. I thought you provided an objective analysis from an engineer's perspective, which I appreciate. You acknowledged all of your uncertainties, and highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of the design. EV's are definitely a polarizing issue these days. The loudest voices present this as a binary issue: 100% EVs on the road, or 100% rollin' coal. Sad that those of us in the middle can't have a good-faith debate about these topics without the 'extremers' going bananas. I hope this doesn't keep you from making more videos like this one.

Jon Schroeder

I was not confused, you were very clear.

Stephen Meeks

Perhaps there will be on opportunity to interview/collaborate with the Edison Motors team. Perhaps your thoughts can help them to refine their product or at least their messaging?

Dale Marthaller

This is an interesting situation. Were the shoe on my foot as the manufacturer, designer, developer, or marketer, I’d be delighted someone with a platform was having a conversation about my product. Even though the conversation is not of the “direct promotional” sort it is, at the very least, a conversation to which people have exposure that perhaps they’d otherwise never had. I think enlightened people enjoy thinking and a lot of subscribers to this channel clearly can be described as enlightened, as well as curious—traits that often are hand-in-hand….I could blather on but I’ve said too much already. Well, I’m thankful I was able to experience your analysis—see you on the next episode! Cheers!

Virtue Streams

I have to agree with all the other comments. I thought your analysis was fair and well thought out. Yes it can work in very particular use cases like logging on a mountain, but it’s a lot harder to make it work for others. They are claiming a lot of things, but they are early days. They rely on pre-Def used engines right now, so that is also a big hurdle to cross. Keep up the good videos.

RandomThingsKeithDoes

Hi Wes I thought it was very fair, shame you got bad feed back. I think we are begining to see a bit of reality coming back into the EV market with customers voting with their feet. Ford can't sell 150’s or mustangs without massive discounts. If Trump gets in, EV’s will have a real hard time. Anyway I like your cold dry engineering content - keep up the good work James Allen Canberra Australia

James Allen

Just to clarify, I was thinking of an EV from the late 2010’s. Modern enough to be similar to the newest EVs in terms of technology, but old enough to be significantly depreciated. If Wes wants something similar to what Edison is proposing, a Chevy Volt would be a good option. It is essentially an EV with a gasoline powered generator on-board.

Kurt Schladetzky

I dont really think there is any confusion is there? I am an EV advocate and I could not see a problem with your video. It raised valid concerns. I am more interested in what Edison motors had so say about your findings? If your going to get people to switch to EVs, misleading advertising is not the answer. I would expect that if they are a proper company and not a scam they would meet your findings head on. Maybe even arrange an interview to speak their case. If they have no proper answers then this will surely be used against them in the future by someone who is actually trying to make EVs seem like a scam etc. Loved the video, keep up the good work!

BouikoTheBou

Possibly, Wes might benefit. Dunno, I've seen those beater EVs. Personally, all my experience is with turbo-generation to supply drive motors (and the occasionally a power back-up)

CapnMac82

People ruin so many good things. Sorry you received so much negative feedback over the video. I think it was a legit thoughtful approach to understanding the benefits, payoffs, and making the math make sense which is very challenging to many of these new concepts. I appreciated the video and didn’t see it as a negative but as a thought provoking topic that needed discussion

Stephen mowrey

I think you would have a lot more credibility if you could speak from personal experience with EVs. You don’t need to spend a lot to learn a lot. For example, a few year old Nissan Leaf or VW e-Golf can be had for $10k or less.

Kurt Schladetzky

It was an excellent video Wes. I think your analysis was pretty spot on. I get fully why you pulled it. Its a shame that people took it the way they did. Like you said strong opinions on both sides. If they were confident in their work they could have posted a point by point rebuttal. But they didn't. They likely threatened a guy with a family. Cheers, we still love ya!

K H

You have to wonder if they didn't threaten a lawsuit. Edison should welcome discussion.

Brandon Bradley

Too bad, it was an excellent video. It was obvious you didn’t call them out. If pointing out facts makes people mad, too bad. Keep pointing them out. Edison should provide a response to your legitimate points about their claims.

Bill Scott

I think it gives an excellent opportunity to do further research, as engineers we do sometimes tell truths that can hurt feelings. I thought you were actually very respectful and made it clear you do wish the company success. I do agree with you that the EV's are coming, but i think weaponizing them in politics (either way) is the wrong path to wide spread adoption. I have heard about instances of mining trucks using the same concept of loaded regenerative down hill/empty up hill producing more power than they consume, i hope to hear more on this.

Corey Brabant

I watched the video Wes. Your analysis made a lot of common sense. People benefit from critical thinking and engaging with viewpoints other than their own. Glad you made it and glad I was able to view it. Keep up the excellent work!

Aaron

Would love to hear what you learned and build on your observations from the first video! BTW, you can share an unlisted YT video on Patreon for people to view if they have the link.

Andrew Roberts

I'm going to find a way for you guys to watch it. Give me a few days to sort that out.

Watch Wes Work

Yes pls. I enjoyed it and will watch it again

Jay and Kate

Well dang. Thats the last time I "delay gratification" and save a WWW vid to watch. I started to watch it but forced myself to turn it off for later. Looked really interesting. It sucks that people suck.

Trevor Saxon

I didnt get the impression you were calling them out .. Seemd to me that you were presenting opinions derived from analyzing data that was in public

Eric Halcik

That's a real shame, I watched it, liked it, I learnt from it, and it made me think. The amount of work that had gone into it was obvious from the presentation. I' m a simple bloke and you pull stuff (fault code diagnosis, robot hydraulics, electronics...) down out of the rafters and allow me to peek into and understand parts of, a world that's mostly beyond me, and that's what you did in this video. You said a number of times that you respected these guy's and what they were doing, that was clear. You have a great brain with a formal education to back it up, that allowed you to ask some straight up questions which you did, nothing to be sorry for. I had actually hoped that this might have turned into a 'collaboration' of sorts where Edison invited you to their facility, showed you what they were doing and then answered your concerns. If that had gone back and forward a few times with respect on both sides it would have made for a great series. Your humility in being willing to take down the video is admirable. Keep up the great work Wes.

CodeAdze

I thought you did a good job navigating the topic. It was nice to hear a tone of reality in the discussion of EV’s.

daniel bowyer

I do like the technology involved. There has to be a way to highlight that without triggering those with strong opinions.

Watch Wes Work

I thought it was a good video. Sucks you are getting slammed for it

Jeffrey Britton

I liked it. I put on my critical thinking cap on and let the various thought/points that you made sink in. Personally, I found it very well presented, logical, and enjoyable as I always find most all of your other presentations. That is why I sighed up to support you on Patreon.

Larry Hare

Ever the diplomat. Thanks for the explanation.

Bill

Video was great. Too many uniformed about ev people right now. I feel everyone wants green clean energy to be achievable. And they might not want to face reality. Go fix a killer robot logging machine. That will keep people off your back.

Jared Bacon

I enjoyed the video, I have many of the same questions about the push to EVs. The free exchange of information is essential. Thank you

James Underwood

I liked your vid. You approached the EV topic asking all the right questions and showing us basics very well. I've been following Edison Motors, too. We don't know how effective a series hybrid will be. Yes, Edison is the first. I imagine that the conversion efficiency from alternator to the drive axles can be better than mechanical through a CV transmission. But it waits to be seen ;)

David Gravereaux

No, you did a good job of it. The problem being that people get all sideways about stuff, and will fly off half-cocked, leaping to a conclusion, off a cliff they, themselves, constructed. Robert Dunn (Aging Wheels), down in Missouri has managed to tightrope being both a fan and a critic of EVs. So, it's a possible thing on YT. A person can argue--I know I would--that such things are probably more necessary on YT and other fora. No one else talks about the "why" EV have those scary fast acceleration, but only so far.. No one else much makes distinctions between Parallel and Series "hybrids." And such things are important.

CapnMac82

The law of unintended consequences, indeed. I liked the format. Maybe next time, create the vid and share it with the subjects first and let them respond to you privately — Then make whatever changes are necessary based on that and add as part of the video you share publicly? Because I’m sure you’ve got the time to do all that, right?

Blake Field

When I saw this, I thought there were going to be problems. While I and many others enjoy the facts, there are many that don't and will chastise you for telling the truth. I would like to thank you for putting this video out and I'm sorry for the backlash it has brought. Best regards, Kevin

Kevin

Definitely a video worth watching. It's a shame that certain topics cannot be debated intelligently without biased fanatics turning it into something that it is not. It's truly hard to have a real debate on so many topics.

Greg Baumgratz

I thought you were spot on with the video. There are some innovation folks that "innovate for innovate sake." I have no idea if this is the case but without a debate we will never know.

Pennies

That was a good video and brought up a lot of points Edison is someday going to have to confront. I don't blame you for taking it down. That's not your fight. An EV video is much like a wiring/solder/crimp video. Half will always hate it no matter what is said.

Brad Dokken

I think that your video was neither pro nor con towards the company. It was simply your honest approach to there claims. You weren't critical of them at all. Telling the truth can seam to some as cruel or misleading, you were neither. I found it interesting and informative. I bet that if you were to go through the comments you'd find that 90 plus percent agree with me. Keep it up..

Dean C Mills

Understand why you decided to pull the video but, for what it's worth, I like others thought the video was genuinely excellent and that you were careful not to be biased and in explaining your reasoning. Look forward to your next video on this and every other subject.

Max Chaplin

I thought you were very fair and measured Wes, that being said I understand your reasons for pulling the video - the internet being what it is it could cause a whole lot of negativity to be directed your way, and you certainly don't need that.

David Yates

I enjoyed your and dobiss's video. Thank you for bringing honest and open. Keep it up!

Brien Devine

Good on you for having a go Wes, don't be too hard on yourself, polarising pretty topical it seems these days with EVs being right up there. My first car at 18 was a Mini traveller van which came with a spare engine in the back as the one in the front was cactus so my first ever car I changed the engine on straight away, not the easiest minis... Fixed a lot of chitty chitty bang bangs along the way. (droning on a bit here...) When us youngfellas were crapping on about infernal combustion engines over an ale or 20 I bemoaned the motion of a piston and its travel having to "reverse" and thought there has to be a better way, like the rotary for example. On second Tesla now and love the idea of a quiet smooth circular motion an electric engine has, along with all the other benefits, like charging off our roof solar. Finding a fast charger last night in the rain in a big city was a bit of a hassle though so not all roses. Your channel is great Wes keep up the amazing work it is a genuine contribution to humanity, we thank you.

Matthew Thompson

Wes, I actually got to watch that video, and considered excellent. You didn't grandstand, spew vitriol, or any of that other nonsense. You just did the math and it didn't add up. I've had a few hybrids, and they have their place. I don't have them anymore because the long term maintence numbers (battery longevity and replacement) didn't add up. I currently have a high efficiency gas only vehicle because those numbers do add up for me. (500-600 miles/week commuting). IMO EV's are coming but not quite ready for prime time yet. The charging costs and environmental issues need to be worked out before they can be phased in. Again IN MY OPINION. For all the folx ready to throw bricks to get their way.

John Lottes

I thought you did a very fair job and were very unbiased. It is hard to really calculate the pros and cons of such a dynamic topic. Hopeful Edison wasn’t threatening legal action or anything.

Logan Swanson

I was worried about that. Good work however, lots going on here not to mention things like embodied carbon, how and where the electricity to charge the batteries is generated, how the lithium is mined and on and on. I suppose it is like many other engineering successes or flops, time will tell if its a Pinto or a Beetle.

Sam Ellison

I am a scientist by training and by nature, which means I am always striving to learn and I try very hard to not let my emotions and biases influence my thinking. That second part is really hard, because we humans are chock full of emotions and biases. Based on your previous work, I think you have a similar approach. The thing is, you are a professional mechanic, so you have a lot of time and money invested in learning about and repairing internal combustion engines. You would be crazy not to see EV technology as a threat, at least to some degree. I think some of that came through in your video, and I think you made the right call to take it down. Perhaps you can “embrace the suck” and pivot to repairing EVs. You already have a lot of the skills you’ll need. On a mostly unrelated note, we patrons obviously love what you do and are willing to support you financially, so you should be careful about trusting us to give you objective and unbiased feedback.

Kurt Schladetzky

It was a great unbiased opinion. We need more of that. I understand why you pulled it to not further a already wide divide. On a positive note you taught people alot

Kris Franklin

For some other channels, that is part of the purpose for their Patreon channel.

Brian Scott

Wanted to suggest just this, it was a good video. If it's for patrons only the ratio of value to unwanted drama will be much better.

BitterCynic

I agreed with your analysis of their claims and think as well they are either too good to be true or the best case. Keep up the good work.

Reese

Oh man, that was a pretty good video. Must have been a lot of work. But I can totally understand the decision to pull it off as I for myself would prefer to have my own peace of mind and not being in the middle of a sh*tstorm.

thedeafguitarist

I'm gonna take a positive spin on this and say ou made EVERY POSSIBLE EFFORT to be unbiased and neutral with a bunch of disclaimers! You simply presented facts like an engineer. I know the main focus of your channel is mechanic work, but to be honest, video essay-like format is VERY popular on YouTube right now, and I bet you could have great success sprinkling these types of analyses in every once in a while, just maybe less polarizing subjects. Part of honest journalism and engineering is being able to speak the truth, but it is hard to do that if you're already friends with the guys you're speaking about. Maybe you can get a follow-up video with a video call for those guys to speak their case that will allow you to sprinkle in bits of your video in between talking segments, but ultimately I support whatever you do!!

Wesley Parnell

Those people still exist but they are getting difficult to find, there's a lot less gray and a lot more black and white these days, I think it's very very important to be friends with people that you don't entirely agree with on every topic, it makes you a better person.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

Probably because I'm an engineer myself, but I thought the analysis was unassailable. You stated your assumptions clearly, and weren't trying to grind any particular axe. I watched it together with my son (high-school age) so he could see some proper engineering analysis, applying basic math and physics knowledge to evaluate an idea. I thought Edison took the critique pretty well, putting the video on their Facebook feed.

Mark Rages

Yes I absolutely agree I have a lot of older friends who are very excited about Edison motors but before that they were completely against electrical vehicles. That particular project is definitely attracting a very specific crowd, and I think it's cool that we can get those particular people excited about electric vehicles in any capacity.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

I completely understand your choice to pull the video, both sides are pretty polarized and whenever anybody asks any questions it seems to come off as hostilities or escalate that way, I was able to understand where you were coming from but some people just really got a feather trigger when it comes to getting upset about that particular topic. EV's are almost as volatile as politics at this point. I'm often disappointed with people choosing to have an emotional response to topics when they should have a more logical thought out response, anger is never a good counterpoint to anything.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

No. I just had a friendly conversation with them. .

Watch Wes Work

That's a good idea. I will find a way for patrons to access the video.

Watch Wes Work

The real win I see with Edison and Deboss is getting folks who have pretty close minded views about electric vehicles to have a reason to be interested and curious. I didn't feel your video was attacking or accusing them, but I agree with your decision to pull it down if that's how it was being used. We need to be skeptical and understand the challenges here, but first we need to recognize that the way things have always been done needs to evolve and change. I think maybe we aren't past this first step of recognizing the need for change and at least right now I think Edison and Deboss are doing a good service here. Bummer about your hard work, but lol, you were right, nobody likes engineers...

Ed W

I liked the video, because it felt like there were a lot of thought provoking questions. I would LOVE a format where Edison and Deboss have the chance to react to and respond to them, and hope the way this shook out hasn’t soured anyone involved on that kind of dialog. There are a hell of a lot of smart people on the internet, and any one human mind can only see so much of any given picture on its own. A conversation between some of those folks would be a fantastic thing to watch. Nothing worthwhile ever emerges without some critical review of whether it’s an absolutely terrible idea or not.

Alex Belshe

Were you contacted by Edison’s counsel and threatened with legal action? Because you did nothing wrong other than bring math.

John Naylor

Disappointed that we on Patreon don't get to see the video. I subbed to support and see what I couldn't see on YT for free...

Brian Scott

"Once upon a time, a few years back " intelligent folks could have a difference of opinion that did not descend into accusatory, antagonistic name calling. Those old folks have mostly died off, to be replaced by a gaggle of egotistical, self centered whatevers, who know more than anyone else. For me, one of the most comprehensive, unbiased reports I have seen. Non-legitimus Non Carborundum. ( Don't let the bast*rds grind you down "

Maurice Johnson

Wes, I appreciated your analysis. It's not detailed enough to give me 100% confidence to know whether Edison is being maliciously deceitful. However, it armed me with more tools to perform my own analysis. However, Edison, etc. al. are following all the steps of a modern startup, which you pointed out: broad public communications, hype, cherry picked (uncommon/favorable) use cases, overly optimistic estimations, qualitative - rather than quantitative claims, etc. Now we can add: anti-FUD briganding that is so enthusiastic it kills honest discussion. Disappointing. Edison has no incentive to counter it, because doubt kills investment and pre-sale incentive.

Daniel Clawson

Unless what you posted was determined to be wrong, I don't think you should have removed it. What we desperately need is healthy disagreement on topics like this.

Thaddeus Ryan

Wes, I disagree with whatever sentiment outsiders may have thrust upon your work. Since I work in academia (University of New Hampshire), all I do all day is deal with evidence-based arguments as to the validity of claims - and your arguments were presented with clarity, objectivity, and deference to the possibility of being incorrect, with space for being corrected. You did an EXEMPLARY job presenting your case. I do agree, however, with one commenter above who stated that you began your video with very high praise for Edison, which took an about-face soon afterwards. That was a bit of a whiplash experience, but it took nothing away from the validity of what you presented. Since I am a 30+ year professional in communications, there are ways to phrase things in this kind of context that would "land" differently, but hurt feelings (if any) should have no bearing on the valence of the facts and the math. Just keep doing what you're doing, Wes. We need more brilliant minds like yours. Shake this off and move on.

Steve Covello

I understand why you pulled it, but as a neutrally interested observer, I thought it was a pretty balanced review/commentary on their product. I did not take it as an attack or shaming, but I'm also not on the other end of your slide rule :) Hopefully others will continue to "do the math" to help highlight companies that are doing things well, as well as honestly point out where other products might be trying to sound better than they actually are. Either way, I'm sorry that all the work you did was for naught - that video definitely took time to craft, and it showed.

Bruce Timberlake

I enjoyed the video and tough criticism is part of bringing a product to market. Disappointed you got grief for what was an even balanced look at their claims

Justin Kenney

You win some and you lose some. You can't please everyone!

Anthony deFreitas

Wes, I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. It was well done and supported with actual facts and numbers. I know several people who own EVs and it is more of a religion with them. When I ask them where the electricity comes from, I just get a blank stare. I wish you would reconsider, although I don't want you take any more heat, either. From my experience, engineering is easier than dealing with people.

Dr. Internet

I enjoyed that video immensely! I can understand why you'd need to pull it if you feel it didn't do what you wanted it to. I was hoping to see you and those guys do a video together going through the things from your video and explaining the different sides to it all. Either way your doing great work!

Bryan Sportel

Don't think you came across as calling anyone out. You raised some valid questions, that's all. Too bad more folks aren't objective enough to know that questioning things is good.

Keith Mezzina

I certainly hope this isn’t a case of the juggernaut channels shadowing the smaller channels? I fully appreciated and respected your logical outline. My wife thought I was listening to a lecture when she walked by! I’m just glad I got to see this point of view before it went poof.

Nick Vogel

It's a shame we have to deal with a world full of assholes... :( If someone thinks you're wrong, give us your references and then tell us how one came to that conclusion. People have forgotten the meaning of "science" and "nuance".

Frank Nimeth Jr.

I must admit, at the end I was left confused. In the beginning, you gave them adulation. In the middle you presented what was the hard reality. I think you tried to balance it out, but it just didn’t seem to have the smooth transition. I think you made the right decision; others will disagree. You're a critic thinker Wes, a numbers guy. I've seen you plot out the problem in search of a solution. You did credit Edison Motors for their innovation, and they do have a practical application. I believe they let their excitement get the better of them, or I should say "you pointed it out". If nothing else, I suspect in reality you forced them to take a hard look at what they were presenting. I have no idea what that conversation was like but look at this way, you offered them a point of view from an engineering perspective that they did not have to pay for. I’m not a youtuber, public speaker or critic. You’ll figure out the right balance.

Lance C

That's a shame, I thought it was fair and was as far from the clickbaity debunking videos as you could get. It also answered a longstanding question I had about why you don't see DE in road vehicles.

Martin McNickle

My Dad used to say, “if the shoe fits, wear it”. I don’t think that those guys would be butt sore if they were 100% confident in their claims. You are not the one with the credibility issue, IMHO. Keep on WWW!

Jeff Chandler

I think that you produced a mainly balanced video. You didn't get caught up in the hype (see Simpsons' Monorail) and you did say that there were some holes which might not be easily plugged. I can understand Edison and Deboss not wanting any form of criticism as they move from prototype, proof of concept (and in my opinion grossly over engineered) vehicle towards production and trying to gain a huge amount of investment to do so but for the size of investment they need the people who control those funds are good with numbers and if the numbers don't add up it will be spotted.

Tim Allan

There's a fine line between "calling out" and questioning/verifying claims made by a manufacturer, or in this case a small group. In my opinion, you walked it perfectly. I would honestly encourage that you put your math back up for the world to see Wes. What's the point of an engineer who can't show his own work?

Noah

I for one though that your analysis was fair and fact based, with *clear* disclaimers that it wasn't a callout, and that you hoped for their success. I think it's always right to analyze companies claims for accuracy. Mind you this is coming from someone who's career is repairing EVs for a living, and I am a supporter of greater adoption of EVs. There certainly a lot of folks that are staunchly anti-EV, and those who don't want to hear anything contradictory to full EV support either, so it makes these topics tough to cover...

Alex Bessinger

I feel the video was well done. I can understand how it may have been received negatively however it was clear to me that it was not intended that way. The only piece of your data I questioned was the cost of energy you used in your model. I think there is still a place for EV videos and hope you will occasionally still make videos about EVs. Just as you stated no matter what they are here to stay.

Joseph Palmer

I hardly ever comment but I'm going to this time. I watched and enjoyed the video yesterday, it did not come across as you "calling them out", it came across as a totally clear and rational analysis of a sales pitch that has more then a whiff of smoke and mirrors/perpetual motion about it.

Martin P

I agree that it's too bad you felt the need to take the video down. I interpreted your actions as a rightful balance of looking at their claims and giving them due consideration. I wish them luck.

Curtis Coon

That's too bad. I thought you were very fair and unbiased. You looked at all the data you had and came to some reasonable conclusions.

John Hubbard

Think their initial scenario of heavy load going down hill and capturing some of that potential energy back as regenerative braking and a much lighter load going back up has merit. When they start to spill over to regular light truck conditions for average Joe use is suspect. Expect that is a bit of marketing stretch to attract more investors at this early stage. The back of the envelope....err spreadsheet calcs were a good reminder that universal application of a given idea is a really hard nut to crack. But yes, polarizing topic for some.

David

Should have mentioned in other post (I get sidetracked) there is some snake oil involved in all the current electrical sales for human salvation. These EV products aren't magic but sure seems like the only thing missing in most of the promotion of them seems to be a girl sawn in half.

Lee Hambrick

I liked the video, I did not think you were calling them out. You showed the math with the data available until they have produced some real-world data it is all speculation. I like the idea of it I have long said the EV industry is approaching it from the wrong direction starting with cars, while they are cheaper to build and test on they consume only a tiny fraction of the fuel in the world compared to commercial, construction, and, agriculture. I also think until batteries advance moire it is a pipe dream unless some sort of hybrid can be economical.

Matthew Hodkins

I think you were very clear in your video about your position. It is so sad that some folks are hyper focused and take things the way they see it only then cause trouble in order to promote their agenda. Ruins things for the rest of us who want to learn.

Fred Mott

Yeah, unfortunately the "I hope they're right, but they're probably wrong... mostly..." angle is a little too subtle for the internet. Good on you for trying something new. You're obviously really passionate on the subject, and it came out in the video. For that reason alone, I think you should give it another shot. Maybe instead do a more broad, educational style video? Get a broken EV in your shop and try to fix it without killing yourself? I think that'll do a lot more for you and what you're trying to do than a opinion style video?

Patrick Filion

Sorry to hear. I had downloaded and was looking forward to watching it on a flight today. That will teach me to delay watching your videos! I'm certain your views were balanced and fair as always

David Jorgenson

I thought your commentary on Edison was fine. I've been a commercial electrician for almost 50 years and I will never own an EV. it puts too much strain on the electrical grid and the added weight of the batteries is making bad roads worse.

Joe Sapiro

I did not think you were calling them out. If I'm honest, pulling the video now makes me feel like they are hiding something.

Adam Salerno

Considering the Key Bridge, today might not be the best day to advocate for engineering. Thing is engineering doesn't require advocacy per se. It's foundational to successful technological progression. You can make fire by banging rocks together, not with nearly the fireworks of a fission reaction but even rock banging involves some elementary engineering. I've been following Deboss and the loggers. They are onto something. It's not as entertaining to watch as your robo skidder but it has more economic pizzazz. Still, engineering is numbers. Selling is belief. I'm never going to be rich but I do math.

Lee Hambrick

I really enjoyed the video, it certainly shed light on the "other half" of the story. Math and physics are apolitical whether people like it or not

Nick Hough

Wes, I didn’t take your video as “calling them out”. Too bad some took it that way. I thought it was unbiased and very informative. It really got me thinking about their approach. Everyone has an opinion. I appreciate the time and thought that you put into your videos. Keep up the good work!

Greg G.

You know maybe some EV content would help bring me around. My biggest problem with EV's and really any new vehicle is that I can't bring myself to pay that kind of money!

M Drouard

I can echo not having an issue with it. It really sucks that you're not allowed to have an opinion on a topic without people taking it well out of context :( I really enjoyed the video, I thought it was very insightful, and pointed out legitimate criticisms and issues that they are/will face. I would love more videos like this, I love learning about new technologies (or new implementations of old technology).

Dale Evans

They where not showing logical numbers, you just did the math for them. They have to be ambitious, they want to sell. You are an engineer by heart not a marketing „wanketeer“ @AvE how is that spelled? Don’t let anybody throw you under the bus what you do is brilliant.

Fabian Kropp

I didn't have any issue with it. It was a straightforward engineering cost benefit analysis. At the end of the day, physics beats economics and marketing hype. Batteries are the most expensive energy storage devices on the planet, but they are pretty much all we have.

John B Moore

I have a feeling that trying to comment on EVs are almost as large minefield as trying to comment on US politics. The believers and haters (on any sides) are taking everything as an personal attack. I thought it was a fact based article that tried to shed some light on the topic but...

Trond Jarle Pedersen

I didnt get the "calling out" vibe from the vid Wes, but i suppose i can see how some might view it that way. EV's are pretty polarizing, and dripping with marketing spin. Its fair to call a spade a spade, but its also tough to be the one sticking your neck out! Cheers Wes👍

Chris Jenkins

You dared to say SOMETHING and backed it with facts. At no time was I under the assumption that Edison and Debosse were pitching a niche product. They sold it hard as a solution for many industries, not just one. Don't beat yourself up over it, at all.

Adam McKnight

Thought the video was good! There is a lot of misinformation out there. It’s hard to talk on a subject like this without it sounding like opinion. Keep up the good work Wes!

Karen Jones

Damn! I was going to watch it tonight. 😕

Joshua A Espinoza

I can't remember if I watched the whole video but I watched at least a good chunk of it, and none of it came across to me as you 'calling them out'. It's a shame to pull the video but I totally understand if it wasn't landing the way you intended! But for real: Wes joining the Edison motors team when?? It feels like you'd be an amazing fit to join a company like that!

Gough Custom

No worries Wes. I found the video interesting and well delivered,it didn't come across as you calling them out to me. Some people on the internet will try and make anything fit their agenda unfortunately

JR

I completely understand why you pulled it. I understand what you meant and I'm sure a lot of others did as well. I have been following deboss and Edison motors for a long time. I think they are doing good things. I like how you broke it all down and I'm very happy I was able to watch the video before you removed it.

Christopher

I thought you were very diplomatic for what its worth! You left the politics out which is impressive as its pretty much the driving factor for ev's. You covered it all very systematically and objectively. I am sure you will make more videos, we'll be here to watch!

mike forbes

Damn, I didn't watch it before it got pulled. Sure it was a fair take!

KEVIN KOSINSKI

These guys are looking for investors not factual analysis.

Ian Poznik

Well damn, it was a good video. Yes, it didn't put Edison in the best light, but I'd rather hear their rebuttal.

Jack Mogren

I thought you went out of your way multiple times to say the opposite. Damn snowflakes. Some people seriously need to sharpen their listening skills.

Shimjocky

Hmm. I certainly didn't interpret it that way. That's too bad.

Peter Church

I thought your approach was objective, unbiased, logical, and thorough.

James Riordan

I think you were right and they didn't like you telling it like it is.

Ian Poznik

I thought you were quite clear, fair and fact based. I didn't take it as trashing them at all - it was a well deserved marketing vs. reality call out.
